Week 7 RBI

Did You Know?

Stout usually has low to medium carbonation and is best served at temperatures above 45 degrees

  1. I have to say, the more I drink fine beers, the more I'm finding that I find more nuances in the taste as the beer gets closer to room temperature. I enjoy most of mine in the 50 degree range now.

The only time I like it ice cold anymore is when it's wicked hot out and I'm drinking something simple (like Sol).

  2. I second that. I love a good quality beer just a hint below room temp. No worries of numbing the palate so you can get all of the wonderful flavors, start to finish. You can drink the same beer at two different temps and get two different drinking experiences.

I just came across a beautiful stout yesterday evening, just don't let the name turn you off... Ommegang's Chocolate Indulgence. Split a bottle (regrettably) with family. By the name, I thought it was going to be a sickeningly sweet syrupy dessert beer. Not at all. As it turns out, it has a roasted chocolate malt flavor with a smooth finish like a cream stout. Puts Guinness to shame. Not sure about the pricetag as it was a gift. Hope you give it a shot, I'd like to hear some other feedback. Any other stouts I should be aware of?

  3. I third that. That Ommegang's Chocolate indulgence sounds like a goodie and pricey as well(11.99 for 22oz). I have a couple of stouts, I would give a tastemaster stamp of ok. Black Hawk Stout by mendocino & Long trail Coffee Stout. The long trail is a mouthful (That's what she said) but can get the job done with one cup. The Black Hawk Stout is a sleeper by a Saratoga Springs, NY brewery. I know people feel low on Guinness but if you try there Import Extra stout you will learn to love'em again. Continue to reach for the stars Mr. Beergoggles.

  4. Wow, I've really got to get on board with Mendocino. I'm curious about the White Hawk IPA that you featured in week 5, and now about the Black Hawk Stout. I'm originally from the Saratoga area, so it's kind of like rooting for the home team. As for Long Trail...I've always been a fan, but haven't tried their Stout. Where did you find it?

  5. I had a cup of the Long Trail Coffee Stout at a spot in village gate. I think it was called the gallery, nice spot! You should check it out. Also, Mendocino has another brewery in Cali.
